Since I began working in clay in 1970, the vast majority of my work has been fired in a high fire oxidation atmosphere in electric kilns. Recently, I converted and old electric kiln to gas, and I've been having a lot of fun with the possibliities of high fire reduction. I studied such glazes and firings in graduate school, and my masters thesis was even about these glazes.
One of my favorite glazes in a gas kiln is a shino carbon trap glaze, decorated with red iron oxide wash brushwork. The brushwork is like the Japanese Sum-ie brushwork; direct strokes, simple yet extremely complex when considering brush load, pressure, and the slight twists and turns, to control the stroke just so. You only get one change, you can't go back and "move" it.

I guess I couldn't call myself a Kentucky potter without SOMETHING with a horse on it! I like the quick simple strokes, and attempt to capture not an photographic-like image of horses, but the spirit of the horse.
